Two Abstracts and a New Adobe Church

After considerable coaxing from his wife Bob painted the distinctive 200-year-old adobe church at the Pueblo of Picuris, southeast of Taos. The day we visited numerous members of the Pueblo were working on maintaining the church and grounds. We were fortunate to see the detailed, recently- restored interior.

What’s behind the adobe walls of New Mexico? That’s the perpetual question as we stroll the streets of Santa Fe and Taos photographing unique gateways, doors and windows. Bob shares a number of his favorites in his latest “Quilt” painting. Don’t you want to peek in the windows or open the door and enter?

The watercolor and ink work is double matted for a 16″ x 20″ frame.

Although the website has not been updated recently, Bob has completed a number of paintings over the past months. Inspiration comes from church bells, Arizona desert, villages of New Mexico and wine bottles. All paintings are available for sale and will be included in the Park HIll Art Club Spring Show and Sale the first weekend of May.

Historic Fruita Schoolhouse

Bob ventured to Utah for his latest painting.  Colorful cliffs tower over the log schoolhouse in the Fruita Historic District within Capitol Reef National Park. Mormons settled in the area around 1880, planting orchards along the Fremont River. Families built the rough-hewn, one room school in 1896. Eighteen–year-old Nettie Behunin taught the first 22 students. Classes continued until 1941.  The National Park Service received certification on the National Register of Historic Places for the  structure and restored it to the 1930s period.

New Mexico Casa, Canyon & Chapel

Bob has recently completed three paintings after his New Mexico summer visit. Visitors to the famous San Fransico de Asis church in Ranchos de Taos frequently note the entry to one of the homes on the plaza. The blue doors and shutters, adobe walls and chile ristas exemplify the region’s architecture. Travelers approaching Taos on NM68 may recognize that moment when you crest the hill and first see the Rio Grande Gorge, the lone tree and mailboxes. This is a scene Nancy’s been requesting a painting of for a long time. The tiny chapel in Talpa is a favorite for artists. Bob is no exception with his most recent version

Casa in La Loma Plaza

Taos, New Mexico

Bob added finishing touches to the last of the paintings he started during the Kilborn workshop in July. The second day of the workshop the class visited La Loma Plaza located west of Taos Plaza. Class participants sketched many of the structures around the historic plaza which was established as a fortress against Indian attack in 1796. Bob chose a more recent adobe home – two stores with tall buttresses.

Pilar Resting Place

Away from the tourist track, high above the New Mexico village of Pilar lies a distinctive cemetery. A strong Hispanic heritage is evident in the grave markers and plastic floral decorations. Views from the cemetery include the Rio Grande flowing southward through the Rio Grande Gorge.

Bob started this paining the first day of the Kilborn workshop in July, after visiting the cemetery for a morning sketching session. Recently he added shading with his  small squares and finished the work with India ink details.

New Sky on Seco

After returning from Taos Bob decided to alter the sky on the Arroyo Seco painting he did during the Kilborn workshop. I think this will be his final version of Arroyo Seco 2012.

Talpa Courtyard

Bob spent most of the day putting details in the painting he started on day 4 of the Kilborn Workshop. Talpa Courtyard now has the definite look of a Bob Yackel watercolor, more of his little squares, ink detail and even tiny symbols within some of the squares. (Click on the image to see more detail.)
