Angie Coleman

Woodblock Prints, Oils, Pastels

Angie Coleman Studio - B

Taos artist Angie Coleman is well known for her woodblock prints. The image of each relief print is produced from the raised surface of a woodblock. As each color is printed more of the background is carved away. One block is used for each limited edition.

The process intrigues me, I can’t imagine the vision and planning required for each new creation. As each layer is chipped away there is no going back; one slip of the chisel and the result is changed. The process produces subtle variations with each print.

Coleman graduated from the California College of Arts and Crafts and has been included in many national juried shows. Her work received the best of printmaking award at the “2007 Taos Invites Taos Show” and the Harwood Museum purchase award in the “Originals New Mexico Show” in 2007. In addition to woodblock prints she also works in oil and pastels.

Angie Coleman's - Winter Scenes - B Many of Coleman’s subjects reflect her years of living in Taos, New Mexico and her love of hiking and camping in the mountains ofColorado and New Mexico. We’ve collected a number of her works over the last ten years. Each day we enjoy Coleman’s images of chamisa, golden aspen, antique truck and rustic adobes in our home. Add to that today’s purchases of two winter scene miniatures and her last available print of Apples and Adobes.

When in Taos visit Angie Coleman in her working studio/gallery at 207 Paseo Del Pueblo Sur, two blocks south of Taos Plaza and immediately north of McDonald’s. The studio is generally open Monday thru Saturday, call 575-779-4658 to confirm hours. Visit her website for more details on the woodblock process and the “Gallery” pages to see the range of her work.

San Jose de Gracia de Las Trampas

Las Trampas 9-9-2010 - for Blog

Sold

In a style similar to his latest paintings of El Santuario de Chimayo Bob just completed a rendition of the charming adobe church in Las Trampas. The watercolor and ink work measures 8×10” and will be matted to fit an 11×14” frame.

The Spanish colonial village of Las Trampas, which dates to 1751,   is located in a high valley of New Mexico’s Sangre de Cristo Mountains along the High Road to Taos (NM76 between Santa Fe and Taos). San Jose de Gracia de Las Trampas was completed in 1760 and still serves as an active parish church. Distinctive features include the wooden belfries and the second-story exterior balcony. Considered one of the best preserved examples of Spanish Colonial Mission architecture in New Mexico the church was fully restored in the 1960s.

4th Annual Arts Festival

Greenwood Village, Colorado – Sept. 10-12, 2010

Art Tents - for Blog

Paintings, photography and pottery, bird houses to woodcarvings the 4th Annual Greenwood Village Arts Festival showcases the creations of local artists. Cherry Hills Marketplace, 5910 S. University Blvd., hosts the event sponsored by the Curtis Arts and Humanities Center. The festival runs Friday, Sept. 10 noon – 6pm, Saturday the 11th 10am-6pm, Sunday the 12th 10am-4pm.

We were especially impressed by the work of three of the artists when we visited the festival Friday afternoon. Watercolors by Bruce White (http://brucewhiteartist.com) capture colorful landscapes. A street scene of Telluride, Colorado was a personal favorite. In addition to dozens of original paintings White sells reasonably priced glyce prints.

The woodcarvings of Lee Thormahelm caught Bob’s eye and interest. Not only are Thormahelm’s carvings detailed and well executed but he completes each piece with excellent painting, finishes and presentation. Several works featuring trout and one of a hummingbird and Colorado blue columbine were particularly noteworthy.

Yelena Sidorova - B

We immediately recognized the unique work of Yelena Sidorova (http://www.sidorovart.com). Bob took a workshop taught by Yelena a few years ago. Classically trained in Russia she uses silk as her canvas. The resulting creations are rich in color and texture. Subject matter ranges from art deco to cityscapes, flowers to figurative. Bob previously purchased two Prague street scenes and will return to the festival tomorrow for a third.

Washington Gulch Log Home

Crested Butte, Colorado

Washington Gulch Log Home - For Blog Sold

While visiting Crested Butte, Colorado this summer we stopped into the Oh-Be-Joyful Gallery. Bob admired an oil painting by Shirley Novak. Later in the day as we drove up the Washington Gulch Road  Bob recognized the cabin in Novak’s work. From the assortment of photographs he snapped Bob’s completed a watercolor of the log home.

Off the beaten tourist path, Crested Butte is surrounded  by mountain peaks and wilderness areas – including one named Oh-Be-Joyful. Well known as a winter ski resort “The Butte” is also a favorite summer recreation area, especially popular with mountain bikers. By mid-July mountain slopes and valleys are covered in wildflowers – cause for celebration with the weeklong Wildflower Festival.

Pemaquid Point LIght - For Blog

Sold

Bob recently completed his painting of Pemaquid Point Light  located along the rocky Maine coastline. The lighthouse stands near Bristol and New Harbor, Maine – a picturesque costal village (see “Lobster Wharf” on the Seaside page).

The classic lighthouse at Pemaquid Point is portrayed on the Maine state quarter. One of the first light stations along the Maine coast the fourth-order Frensnel lens is still an active aid to navigation in Muscongus Bay. The Friends of Pemaquid Point Lighthouse open the tower for educational tours 7 days a week from Memorial Day through Columbus Day.

The Cape Cod-style keepers quarters and surrounding Lighthouse Park is managed by the town of Bristol. The Fishermen’s Museum fills the first floor with tidy and informative displays relating to the history of the local fishing industry. The second floor contains a vacation apartment available through a rental agency. Imagine a peaceful evening spent in a front porch rocking chair gazing out to sea as the light flashes every six seconds.

Summertime in Arroyo Seco

Summertime in Arroyo Seco - For Blog

Sold

Santisima Trinidad in Arroyo Seco, New Mexico has been a recurring subject for Bob. Built in the early 1800s, the historic adobe church sits among imagined fields of flowers and lavender in his latest completion.

Situated seven miles northeast of Taos, Seco – as the village is known to locals – is a colorful and quirky destination. The narrow, winding road weaves past restaurants, galleries and shops. In the Doug West Gallery we’re always intrigued by the skies in his paintings and serigraphs. The artistic works of Claire Haye include paintings, sculpture and woodblock prints at Claire Works. But, it’s the creative jewelry designs that become treasured gifts at our house.

One can’t leave Seco with an ice cream treat from Taos Cow. The all natural super premium ice cream is hard to beat. We recommend the pinion caramel if it’s on the daily list.

Taos Courtyard

Taos Courtyard for Website

Sold

Bob chose new subject matter for his latest watercolor. The historic Bert Phillips house in Taos, today hosts shops and galleries including the Kilborn Gallery and La Lana Wools. The flower bedecked courtyard faces Paseo del Pueblo Norte just north of Bent Street in Taos, New Mexico.

Bert Phillips was one of the founders of the Taos Society of Artists in 1915. Phillips and fellow artist Ernest Blumenschein met while studying at the Julian Academy in Paris. J.H. Sharp passionately described the New Mexico pueblos, peoples and landscape. In 1898 Phillips and Blumenschein set out from Denver with a wagon filled with provisions and art supplies. Their planned  tour of the American Southwest hit a snag when a wagon wheel broke north of Taos. Philips stayed with the wagon while Blumenschein made his way to Taos to find a blacksmith. “Blumy” enthusiastically described the town and surrounding landscape upon his return. Their trip came to a halt as the two spent the summer painting in Taos. Inspired with creativity Philips decided to permanently move to Taos.

Taos and northern New Mexico continue to inspire artists. Bob even admits he reached new heights with Taos Courtyard.

Back to Chimayo

Chimayo 6-24-10

Sold

With a number of detail changes Bob completed another vignette of Santuario de Chimayo. The painting emits an inviting serenity one would find missing during the busy summer season when visitors and pilgrims from around the world flock to the church of the “miracle healing dirt”.
