After much encouragement Bob left New Mexico behind and looked to the Colorado mountains for his latest painting. The inspiration came from a photograph son Eric took on a cross country ski trip to Gothic this winter. Eric's Gothic Photo 2012

Gothic is located 8 miles north of Crested Butte, CO. A silver mining boom town in the 1880s, Gothic faded to ghost town status. Today the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory populates Gothic in summer for research and education about high-altitude ecosystems.

Revisiting Pilar

Bob’s latest completion revisits the private chapel in Pilar. The New Mexico village sits on the banks of he Rio Grande south of Taos. When visiting Pilar stop into the pottery/painting studio of Steven Kilborn.

Art Show–Madden Museum

This is Colorado

The annual This is Colorado exhibit at the Madden Museum of Art runs January 12 – February 23, 2012. Sponsored by the Heritage Fine Arts Guild of Arapahoe County, the juried show features original two-dimensional works by 80 Colorado artists.

An evening reception celebrates the exhibit’s opening Friday, January 13 from 5 – 8 pm.

Jennifer Garner, Director/Curator of the Metropolitan State College of Denver’s Center for Visual Art, served as juror for the 2012 exhibition. Associate Professor Garner teaches BFA Thesis and Exhibition and has served as juror for numerous exhibitions including the highly acclaimed Cherry Creek Arts Festival.

The Madden Museum of Art is located in Palazzo Verdi at 6363 South Fiddler’s Green Circle, Greenwood Village, Colorado. The museum is open Monday – Friday 9am – 5pm, admission is free. During the first two weeks original unframed bin works by featured artists will also be available for purchase.

New Painting–Fall 2011

Bonaparte and Adobe

Bob spent most of the fall recovering from successful open heart surgery and rehabbing, therefore painting become a secondary activity. Before the September surgery he completed a commissioned piece. Working from 20-year-old snapshots to worked to capture the essence of Bonaparte, a black cat.

The other new work came from inspiration and photographs from the summer Kilborn workshop in Taos. Bob revisited a 1920s adobe home secluded down a quiet lane.

During the “Hidden Taos” week Bob started four  paintings. The only one he finished during the week was the colorful rendition of the Rio Pueblo Canyon which was the one included (and sold) in the Friday evening show opening at the Kilborn Gallery.

Village of Pilar - Detail 2Months after the workshop Bob returned to his Pilar painting to add squares. Then he started adding inked symbols within the squares. Nancy thought it got too busy but son Michael loved all the tiny detail. Dad framed the finished work and gave it to Michael for Christmas.

Kilborn Workshop–July 21, 2011

Adobe and Pottery

Workshop day four started with sketching in the flowery courtyard in front of the Kilborn Gallery in Taos. The building was originally built by Bert Phillips one of the founders of the Taos Society of Artists.

Conjecture of the day was whether or not the wagon wheel framing the window on the right is the original broken wheel that brought Phillips and Ernest Blumenschein to Taos.

Kilborn Corn Pots - BLater the class relocate to the Kilborn home for more sketching and lunch before an afternoon of painting at the studio. Stephen’s colorful pottery and artwork decorate the historic adobe home.

Task of the day was selecting the painting each attendee gets to frame for the Friday evening show at the Gallery. Bob chose his canyon work. Good choice.

The workshop show is held Friday, July 22, 2011 from 6-8pm. The Kilborn Gallery is located at 136A Paseo del Pueblo Norte, Taos, New Mexico.

Kilborn Workshop–July 20, 2011

Rio Pueblo Landscapes

Wednesday was landscape day with the workshop group gathering southwest of Taos, overlooking a scenic canyon cut by the Rio Pueblo. Nearby the river flows into the Rio Grande.

Spring green foliage along the river banks glistened in the morning sunlight. The rocky canyon walls later appeared in the artists’ paintings in a multitude of colors. Everyone’s still trying to decide what the herd of animals on the other side of the gorge were – pronghorn antelope, elk, mule deer, sheep, goats? All agree they were not cows or horses. Will Kathy’s zoom lens give us an answer? Update – they were goats, which is what Bob said – right again.

After returning to the studio everyone got busy creating their individual Rio Pueblo interpretations. During the critique session the consensus was that Bob’s colorful rendition was complete. I bet he can’t help but add some final touches.

Phish House – Sketch & Paint

Tuesday morning workshop participants gathered at a private home, the Martinez House, to sketch and photograph the unique characteristics of the adobe built in the 1920s.

Windows, doors, vigas, stairway and landscape features – each artist found different details to place in their paintings. You can see where Bob drew his inspiration for the day.
